Joseph is a CIA, CPA, and CMA with 18 years of internal audit, risk management, and accounting experience spanning multiple industries including public accounting and consulting. We asked Joseph to provide insights into the internal auditing industry and to share what he enjoys about his role as an educator and internal auditor.
My primary focus is to develop the next generation of internal auditors.
For those pursuing a career in the accounting field, choosing a specialization is a big decision—and it can be difficult to decide. There are a lot of career paths you can take as an accountant, and many people may not be aware of what internal audit is or the different career opportunities it provides.

Specializing in internal audit was a good fit for Joseph because he enjoys getting a close look at the inner workings of a company, including the financial statements and corporate strategies in place. As a professor and internal auditor, Joseph recognizes the importance of communicating that there are opportunities beyond just the public accounting (tax and audit) career paths and sharing the value of internal audit with his students.
I chose my area of specialization because I like to know how things work and how to make them work better. As such, internal auditing was a natural fit. I believe it is important because good governance cannot be possible in the absence of accountability. Internal audit is the means by which accountability can be pursued.

A great way to give back to the profession is to get involved with accounting organizations. Joseph is a member of The Institute of Internal Auditors (The IIA Opens in new window), Institute of Management Accountants (IMA Opens in new window), American Institute of CPAs (AICPA Opens in new window), and many other professional associations. Getting involved in these organizations will help you develop professionally and provide opportunities for career growth. Many have great opportunities for networking and continuing your professional education.
Professional accounting organizations will also provide ample opportunities to volunteer. As a volunteer, you can gain experience and find additional networking opportunities that can help you learn about the career paths available to you. Joseph has volunteered as a member of Committee of Research and Education Advisors (CREA) and is currently a Subject Matter Expert for the Global Professional Knowledge Group. Volunteering and being involved in accounting organizations helped Joseph develop key social skills and connections that allow him to succeed in his role.
To Joseph, the most rewarding aspect of his work is seeing his students succeed. He is passionate about developing and progressing the auditing profession, and his work as an educator allows him to do just that.
Whether it’s landing their first internal audit role or passing their first certification, I take great satisfaction in trying to develop [my students] as future professionals.
