CIA Exam Changes in 2012

Changes in 2012

The IIA had said that your score is based on the number of scored questions that you answer correctly and each scored question contributes equally to your final test score. That being said, some non-scored questions are included on each exam for the purpose of determining the difficulty of these items only, and they do not contribute to your exam score.

Beginning in January 2012, The IIA will reduce the number of non-scored questions on the CIA exam from 20 to 10, and as a result, the total questions (scored and non-scored) will be reduced from 100 to 90. At the same time, the Pearson VUE exam tutorial, which was previously only available to candidates at the exam center, will be removed from the exam and available on The IIA website in all languages in which the exam is offered. Correspondingly, the total time allowed to complete the CIA exam will be reduced from 3 hours (2 hours 45 minutes for the 100-question exam + 15 minutes for the tutorial and survey) to 2 hours 30 minutes (2 hours 25 minutes for the 90-question exam and 5 minutes for the survey).

This change has no impact on the scoring of the exam as the non-scored questions were used to pre-test items and were not counted in the final score. You should continue completing 20-question quizzes in 30 minutes so you will be adequately prepared for budgeting your time on the actual exam.
