At Gleim, we care about the environment and the impact our company has. That’s why we use a solar electricity generating system and we have a recycling program.
In December of 2008, Gleim had a solar electricity generating system installed on the rooftop of its main building at 4201 N.W. 95th Blvd. in Gainesville, FL. Things have been sunny ever since.
The system, which was the largest in Gainesville when it was first activated, remains one of the largest of its kind. In addition, it is one of the few systems that is actually producing almost as much electricity as the business is using.
The Gleim system was the first feed-in tariff commercial system in the United States. Feed-in tariff systems were first promoted in Germany, which is now the world’s largest solar market. Launched for the first time in the U.S. in March of 2009 by Gainesville Regional Utilities, a city-owned utility, the feed-in tariff program encourages local businesses to invest in renewable energy. Under the program, GRU, which serves some 90,000 customers, contracted to buy power back for 20 years at a predetermined price. Rates were determined by the size of the system installed.
Dr. Irvin Gleim, President of Gleim Publications, states, “We see ourselves as stewards of the environment. Philosophically, making this investment was the right thing to do and fits with our existing operation. The GRU program made the decision to install the solar electricity generating system good business sense.”
Recycling is one of the most important ways that businesses can be stewards of the environment in which they operate.
Gleim, a growing company of over 100 employees, recycles all paper, cardboard, aluminum, steel cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles, wrapping, steel shipping bands, and styrofoam.
Gleim is so successful in its endeavor to recycle everything it possibly can that the entire company throws away only the equivalent of a couple typical households’ trash. Gleim is as green as they can get with the help and participation of each and every Gleim team member.
In 1974 acclaimed University of Florida professor Irvin Gleim and his wife wrote the first Gleim CPA Review book. Their mission was to create an effective and affordable course that could be used by candidates that preferred self-study. In less than 6 years, Gleim sales to accounting students and CPA candidates rocketed to over 90% of the market, establishing Gleim as the CPA Prep Industry pioneer.
With this early success under his belt, Dr. Gleim leveraged his accounting expertise in 1980 to self-publish what are now the most widely used CIA & CMA Review courses on the market. An avid pilot, he also applied his tried & true learning techniques to the aviation market, self-publishing pilot training books. The dozens of titles, as well as Test Prep, audios, and Gleim Online courses, are very widely used by pilots to pass FAA pilot knowledge tests and FAA practical (flight) tests.
Today, in addition to being a leader in CPA, CIA, CMA, EA and aviation certification prep, Gleim also publishes in-class materials for accounting professors and students as well as hundreds of hours of CPE credit for professional accountants.
Irvin N. Gleim, Ph.D., CIA, CMA, CFM, CPA, CFII, is a Professor Emeritus at the Fisher School of Accounting, University of Florida. He has been active in both pilot and accountant training for over 45 years. His Knowledge Transfer Systems make learning and understanding an intuitively appealing process.
