Dr. Irvin N. Gleim, Ph.D., CPA, CIA, CMA, CFM, founded Gleim CPA Review in 1974 to launch the first national self-study CPA review book. Since then, he has helped accounting candidates pass over one million accounting certification exams. In celebration of Dr. Gleim’s birthday on November 6th, we’d like to take a moment to re-introduce you to the founder of Gleim Exam Prep.
In 1971, Dr. Gleim earned his doctoral degree in accounting from the University of Illinois. He worked for a year in a large accounting firm and served as an accounting professor for Illinois State University and Pittsburg State University, where he met his future wife, Darlene. The couple settled in Gainesville, Florida, where Dr. Gleim taught at the University of Florida. As a professor, Dr. Gleim saw how demanding preparing for the CPA Exam was for his students as well as how few options there were for self-study CPA Exam review. Knowing he could provide a better solution, Dr. Gleim decided to create a new study method for CPA candidates.
Dr. and Mrs. Gleim worked together to produce the original Gleim CPA Review book: he wrote while she typed and edited it. Using notes from his own preparation for the CPA Exam and college coursework, Dr. Gleim created the first self-study review book for the CPA Exam.
Their initial venture into accounting exam review courses advanced the industry and served as the foundation for Gleim Exam Prep, the leader in accounting exam prep for over 45 years.
The proven Gleim methodology has elevated Dr. Gleim to the forefront in the field of accounting. While serving as an accounting professor at UF’s Fisher School of Accounting for 17 years, Dr. Gleim taught thousands of the brightest accounting students, and when he retired in 1988, he was named Professor Emeritus. In 2013, the Fisher School commemorated Dr. Gleim’s tenure as a beloved and influential faculty member by naming the atrium of Gerson Hall after him. The Dr. Irvin N. Gleim Atrium now features a plaque acknowledging his academic research and professional accomplishments and displays his original CPA review book.
